Simultaneously with Transnet, hackers attacked steel supplier Macsteel

International steel supplier Macsteel fell victim to a cyberattack last month - around the same time that hackers attacked South African logistics company Transnet.

Macsteel confirmed the cyberattack to Fin24, but provided very few details. The incident took place at the end of July and Macsteel managed to get its IT systems back online within two business days. No critical information (neither personal nor confidential data) was touched.

Macsteel, which supplies steel to many different industries, said the measures it took to protect the integrity of information and systems. The company is currently investigating the source of the attack.

We will remind, on July 22, 2021, the Transnet company was attacked by hackers, presumably for the purpose of sabotage. The attack disrupted production processes and damaged data and equipment, as a result of which the company was even forced to declare force majeure. As it turned out later, Transnet became a victim of Death Kitty ransomware (other names are Hello Kitty and Five Hands).
